Rainfall-Induced Slope Stability and Soil Nail Modelling

Model a reinforced slope, simulate 24-hour rainfall infiltration, and compare SRM safety factors for the natural, post-rainfall, and soil-nailed conditions.

Overview

This tutorial guides you through evaluating rainfall-induced slope instability in MIDAS GTS NX. You will create a two-dimensional slope consisting of embankment and foundation soils, define Mohr-Coulomb properties and permeability, and model soil nails using truss elements. You will apply rainfall as a surface-flux boundary and perform stress- seepage- slope coupled analysis, including 24-hour transient seepage analysis for rainfall. Using the Strength Reduction Method, you will then compare failure zones and safety factors for the natural slope condition, the post-rainfall condition, and the soil-nailed slope. By completing this quest, you will learn how to: - Create and mesh a two-layer 2D slope model - Define Mohr-Coulomb soil and elastic nail material - Define permeability of the soil layers - Configure rainfall using a surface-flux boundary - Perform transient rainfall seepage analysis - Calculate slope safety factors using the Strength Reduction Method - Compare slope stability before rainfall, after rainfall, and after reinforcement
